Getting Started

Admission Requirements

  • An Associate's degree in Human Services or completion of at least 56 traditional semester hours (84 quarter hours) from college-level courses taken at an accredited institution(s) of higher learning. Students who do not meet the minimum credit requirement to enter the BSW program have the option to enroll in the Associate of Arts or General Studies program at MVNU to complete their remaining credit requirements to begin the BSW program.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher (on a 4.00 scale) in all previous college course work

  • Completion of Social Work Foundation courses, including Introduction to Social Work, Cultural and Human Diversity, Social Work Interviewing and Documentation and a supervised Field Experience. All Foundation courses must be completed with a minimum "C" grade. Students in need of all or some of the Foundation courses can complete their remaining courses online through MVNU. Courses are offered twice a year. (See course descriptions on page 5.)

  • Completion of required cognates, including Principles of Biology with Laboratory, General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Introduction to Sociology (All Social Work cognates must be completed prior to SWKR3013: Social Work Practice with Individuals). (See course descriptions on page 6.)

  • Complete a Registration Agreement Form.

How to Finance Your Education

The financial aid will assist with application process for tuition reimbursement from employer, federal student aid, or a student loan.

Graduation Requirements (total of 120 semester hours needed to graduate)

A total of 120 semester hours is required in order to graduate, including transfer credits. The 120 semester hours must include the 46 semester hours in the Social Work degree-completion program requirements. They must also include 39 semester hours in General Education coursework:

  • 15 semester hours in Arts & Humanities

    • minimum of 3 credit hours in an English composition course with a research writing component

    • minimum of 3 credit hours in Bible/Theology

  • 15 semester hours in Natural & Social Sciences and Mathematics

    • minimum of 3 credit hours in Mathematics (must include MATH2063G: Introduction to Statistics)

    • minimum of 3 credit hours in Natural Science (must include BIOL1014: Principles of Biology with laboratory)

    • minimum of 3 credit hours in Natural Science (must include BIOL1014: Principles of Biology with laboratory)

  • 9 semester hours in Liberal Arts electives
