Digging in the dirt builds relationships at MVNU
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- For the past 37 years, Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s students, faculty and staff have taken one day in May to stop what they are doing, gather their rakes and spades and work outside around campus together.
This tradition, held this year on Thursday, May 1, is known as Blue-Green Day after the school’s colors which reference the beauty of the earth.
From planting flowers, mulching and watering, to laughing, joking and eating, Blue-Green Day has always been a day of togetherness. In 1971, the day started with breakfast for everyone, a time of outdoor work, a lunch and then a kind of field dayincluding a contest to catch a muddy pig. Workers enjoyed a day of hard work, fun and games and a Gospel Sing in the evening.
While the tradition has changed shape over the years, one thing remainsBlue-Green Day is a great time for students and campus personnel, a day when two sides come together to share an investment in bringing beauty to the campus. This year, a picnic lunch will be held as well.
"I think this is a great opportunity for our campus, on several different levels,” said Dr. Daniel Martin, MVNU President. “It gives us an opportunity to perform environmental stewardship. It is also a great way for us to support the wonderful group who work to make the facilities beautiful all year round."
Aside from the physical benefits, Martin feels Blue-Green Day is also a way to build the community of MVNU. One current staff member even met her future husband at an early Blue-Green Day when they were both students. “I’ve never worked at a school that had anything like this, so that makes it even more special for our campus,” said Martin. “It allows students, faculty and staff to work in an environment outside the classroom toward a common goal.”
With more participants than ever in 2007, there is a general feeling among the student body that Blue-Green Day has a lot of potential for 2008. And while not everyone has a green thumb, everyone has something to contribute.
"It is a special day for our campus that deserves special attention,” Martin concluded. Blue-Green Day is a great tradition for MVNUone that keeps the campus beautiful and helps build community. Watch for an online photo gallery after the event!
