Boyd recognized as Social Worker of the Year
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Karen Boyd, associate professor of social work at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, has been named Social Worker of the Year for Ohio’s Region 8 Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
"I feel honored to receive this unexpected award and recognition from social work colleagues," said Boyd. "Being a social worker has allowed me to have a lifelong journey of learning, discovery, understanding and service in various settings, and now my career allows me the opportunity to help educate future social workers. Social work is often a misunderstood profession, but for me, social work demonstrates a commitment to 'the least of these.'"
Boyd received her bachelor’s degree in sociology and history from MVNU, an M.A. in sociology and an M.A. in social work from The Ohio State University, and is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at OSU. She has taught at MVNU since 1988. Previously, she worked with Knox Community Hospital, Mount Vernon Psychological Services and the Knox County Department of Human Services. She has also been an adjunct lecturer at Otterbein College and Wittenberg University, and is a licensed independent social worker in the state of Ohio.
Dr. Stephen Ragan, dean of the School of Education and Professional Studies said, "Karen's award for work both in the department and in the community provides testimony to her consistent commitment to her profession as well as to the quality of our faculty and our program."
Ohio's Region 8 consists of 11 counties: Knox, Ashland, Coshocton, Crawford, Holmes, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Stark, Tuscarawas and Wayne. Boyd will be honored at a regional dinner held on May 1 in Wooster, Ohio.
With over 150 thousand members nationwide, NASW promotes, develops and protects the practice of social work and social workers. The organization also seeks to enhance the well-being of individuals, families and communities through its work and advocacy.
