MVNU SonFest features Relient K, tickets on sale now
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- SonFest, Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s annual outdoor Christian music festival, will present the national SHOUTfest tour on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 1 to 10 p.m. in the Grove of the MVNU campus.
Tickets are on sale now. Award-wining group Relient K will headline the event. There will be two stages, a variety of extreme games, festival food and giveaways.
Relient K, a rising band with Ohio roots, has received numerous awards, including two Dove Awards and a Grammy nomination in 2003 for Best Rock Gospel Album. They broke into the mainstream in 2004 after Capitol signed them on release of Mmhmm, their fourth record, which debuted at #15 on the Billboard 200. It produced three top-five hits on Christian radio and won two top-20 hits on mainstream radio.
Their fifth and most recent album, Five Score and Seven Years Ago, debuted at #6 and has earned them appearances on “The Tonight Show with Jay Lenno,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and MTV’s “TRL.” They’ve toured with the likes of Simple Plan and Good Charlotte and plan to release The Bird and the Bee Sides in July.
Thousand Foot Krutch’s new album The Flame in All of Us is a blend of the band’s patented “rawk” sounds and exploratory ballads. The Toronto natives have sold more than 450,000 copies of their albums Set It Off, Phenomenon and The Art Of Breaking. Their 2003 Phenomenon album landed five songs on rock radio and bought the song “Rawkfist” into the mainstream. It has since been heard in sports stadiums, commercials (NHL, NFL, MLB, ESPN) and the WB’s “Smallville.”
Family Force 5, comprised of three brothers and their two friends, creates a mix of punk, rock, fun, and electronic groove full of heavy guitar riffs and influences like OutKast, Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys, Duran Duran and White Stripes. Formed in Atlanta, Ga., in 2004, their “crunk rock” sound gained attention from Maverick Records. Their first album, Business Up Front/Party in the Back, was released in 2006.
Additional artists on the SonFest roster include Sixpence None the Richer, After Edmund, Jason Morant, Manic Drive, I am Terrified, The Steels, Mission Six, Gabriela Hindy, Say You Will, One Friday and other local acts. A variety of activities will be available for people of all ages, in addition to merchandise tents and an MVNU information tent (download activity waiver form online to participate). There will be plenty of lawn space for lawn chairs and blankets in front of the two stages. Gates open at noon.
Tickets are $15 each ($12 for groups of 10 or more) and go on sale to the general public on July 8 through iTickets.com or by calling 1-800-965-9324 (service fee applies). Tickets will be $20 at the gate the day of the event (no group rates at the gate). MVNU’s Cougar Corner Bookstore and Mount Vernon’s Gospel Supply Shop are also selling tickets.
