Modern Languages

We live in a shrinking world. With incredible technological advances in social media and the ease of travel, our world is getting smaller. It is easier than ever to communicate with people worldwide, and knowing more than one language is increasingly important, both at home and abroad.

MVNU Spanish majors are extraordinarily competitive in the job market; bilingualism is one of the most sought-after traits among employers today. In addition to being prepared for successful careers, Spanish students at MVNU are afforded numerous opportunities to serve the community and the world around them, becoming excellent citizens, stewards, and agents of change.

  • Immediate practical experience — From the beginning of your academic program, you will be afforded numerous opportunities for involvement with the local Hispanic community.
  • High achievement — MVNU Spanish majors consistently receive outstanding scores on the internationally recognized Oral Proficiency Interview.
  • Learning abroad — You will have the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture by studying abroad for a semester in Costa Rica. Students commonly return from this experience functionally fluent in Spanish.
  • Dr. Nathan Reiss
    • Assistant Professor of Spanish

Study abroad is built into the Modern Language program. Many of our students elect to spend a semester in San José, Costa Rica through a partnership between MVNU and the Spanish Language Institute. Other options are available, such as the Latin American Studies Program (CCCU), also in Costa Rica, and the Nazarene International Language Institute in Ecuador.

All MVNU students are also invited to participate in our many other service and learning trips, some of which are to Spanish-speaking countries.

MVNU has many endowed scholarships available for students of a wide variety of backgrounds and majors, such as the Wellmon/Chesnut Family Endowed Scholarship for Spanish majors.

Bilingual and multilingual individuals are in high demand. Besides becoming educators, some MVNU Spanish graduates accept jobs as translators and interpreters, providing vital guidance and interpretation in medical, legal, and educational environments. Other graduates become missionaries, go into corporate law, or pursue various higher degrees in graduate school. The options for Spanish majors are virtually unlimited.

"The Spanish program offers an incredible opportunity to study abroad for a semester in Costa Rica. This trip cultivated the best of my potential as a student and taught me so much about myself and life beyond just learning the language. This program also does a good job at preparing students to become both sensitive to the cultural differences of others and competent in this growing method of communication."
