Former MVNU professor remembered with memorial bench
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (November 11, 2022) — A bench has been installed along the Heart of Ohio Trail in memory of Virginia “Ginny” Cameron. She was a vocal and choral music professor at Mount Vernon Nazarene University for 42 years until her retirement in 2012. Cameron went home to see her Savior on Oct. 29, 2021.
“She was well-known in the community, and she and her husband (Ron) walked the trail,” said Dan Tiffany, officer with the Heart of Ohio Trail. “We were glad to work with the university on this project.”
Trinia Huddleston, Student Life Coordinator, was approached by Tiffany seeking collaboration with MVNU to make the bench possible.
“They helped provide the bench and all materials needed. We were asked to provide some students and staff to help clean up the area and install the new bench,” said Huddleston. “Ginny was such an important part of campus, both while she served as a faculty member and after she retired as she continued to be involved. This was a great opportunity for our student to honor her legacy at MVNU.”
The bench was installed on Oct. 28, just north of Johnstown Road at the bridge. A crew of MVNU students and members of the Facilities Department completed the installation.
“I decided to participate in this project because I believe there is so much value in not only serving MVNU’s campus but serving the community as well,” said Maggie Little, sophomore and administrative chairperson of the Student Government Association. “It is important students help with projects like this because it is a great way to be active in the community and make connections with those outside of MVNU’s campus. I had a great time helping out!”
Cameron’s contributions to MVNU, both personally and professionally, are still felt on campus. Her peers are appreciative of the Knox County Park District’s efforts to honor legacy in the community.
“Ginny was a beloved colleague, teacher, and mentor at MVNU and in the community. She inspired and encouraged so many during her time on this earth. Many will remember her for playing the bagpipes and singing in MVNU’s Messiah ,” said Dr. John Packard, Professor of Music, and Chair of the Music Department. “She was a spiritual force to be reckoned with, and I miss her uplifting prayers. This is a wonderful tribute to her memory.”
