MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University Music Department will present a fall instrumental ensembles concert on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium. This free event is open to the community.

The concert will kick off with the MVNU Jazz Band performing a moderate swing piece by Lennie Niehaus titled “All In,” featuring sophomore Casey Kennedy on trumpet. They will then shift to a Latin arrangement of “Yesterdays” by Otto Harbach, arranged by Mark Taylor. It was originally from the 1933 Broadway play Roberta. The Jazz Band will wrap up their set with Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed,” featuring guest soloist Eric Snyder on both “Yesterdays” and “Overjoyed.” The Jazz Band is directed by Mr. Chuck Dettmar.

Additionally, the concert will showcase the MVNU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Flute Choir, and String Ensemble. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform works including “Ghost Train” and “October” by prominent composer Eric Whitacre, as well as “Fanfare Esprit” by Carole Britten Chambers. Their set will conclude with “Selections from Wicked,” arranged by Jay Bocook. The Wind Ensemble is directed by Dr. John Packard.

The Flute Choir and String Ensemble will perform several works as well. The Flute Choir, comprised of MVNU students and community members, is directed by Mrs. Jennifer Packard. The String Ensemble is directed by Dr. Juan Carlos Ortega.
