MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — The Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University will present a spring instrumental ensembles concert on Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium.  The community is invited to attend this free event.  The concert will feature the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Flute Choir, and String Ensemble.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble directed by Dr. John Packard will present music from popular video games including “World of Warcraft,” “Final Fantasy VII,” “Myst III,” and “Tetris.” They will also present two pieces by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin from the “Civilization” video game series. The first is “Sogno Di Volare,” which means “Dream of Flight” and is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s writings on flight. The second work, “Baba Yetu,” is based on a Swahili translation of the Lord’s Prayer. This piece will close the concert.

The MVNU Jazz Band will present three contrasting charts that show-off the talent within the band. They will open with “Wave,” a laid-back cha-cha featuring Seth Righter on baritone sax. They will then transition to David Springfield’s beautiful ballad, “Ever After,” and will conclude with “Reverse of the Curse,” a fiery swing chart by Craig Skeffington.  The band is regularly directed by Mr. Chuck Dettmar, but will be directed in this concert by Dr. Trevor Marcho, Adjunct Instructor of Trombone and Mount Vernon High School Band Director.

The Flute Choir and String Ensemble will also perform several works. The Flute Choir is comprised of MVNU students and community members and is directed by Mrs. Jennifer Packard. The String Ensemble is directed by Dr. Juan Carlos Ortega.
