Smart Ways to Give

Would it surprise you to hear that you can make an outstanding Christian education possible with a gift that maximizes your charitable impact and saves you money? Discover how with the smart options below.

Make an Immediate Difference

When you support MVNU by giving online or writing a check, you make great things happen and may receive a federal income tax charitable deduction. If you itemize, you can write off the amount you are donating, resulting in lower taxable income. (Please contact your financial advisor or tax consultant if you’re unsure whether your gift is tax-deductible.)

Year-end deadline: A gift made by check and received by MVNU in the mail will be processed as a 2025 gift if it is postmarked on or before Dec. 31, 2025, and the check is dated on or before Dec. 31, 2025. If the check or the postmark is dated after Dec. 31, 2025, the gift will be processed as a 2026 gift. To mail your gift, please make your check payable to “Mount Vernon Nazarene University,” include any applicable designation(s) in your check’s memo line and send it to the university at: Development Office, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 800 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.

Use Appreciated Securities

By donating appreciated securities that you have owned for longer than one year, you receive the same income tax savings as you would by making a gift of cash. You also eliminate any capital gains tax on the appreciation. To make a gift of publicly traded stocks or mutual funds via electronic transfer, see our stock gift instructions and more information or contact John Mohnasky in MVNU’s Development Office at 740-392-6868 ext. 4134.

Year-end deadline: We will process an electronic transfer as a 2025 donation if the securities are received in MVNU’s account by Dec. 31, 2025. Transfers arriving after Dec. 31, 2025, will be receipted as a 2026 gift. Plan to request your securities transfer early enough to allow time for it to be received by MVNU in advance of the Dec. 31, 2025, deadline.

Secure Higher Gift Annuity Rates

Recommended charitable gift annuity (CGA) rates are the highest they have been in 16 years — but that could change. Why not take advantage of the higher rates by creating a gift annuity now?

Year-end deadline: It’s best to not wait until the end of the year to set up your CGA. Contact us today to ensure we have time to complete your CGA in 2025. The Church of the Nazarene Foundation, the foundation for MVNU’s sponsoring denomination, administers gift annuities for the University.

Contribute via Your Donor Advised Fund (DAF)

Add funds to an existing DAF or open a new one by a written agreement at a community foundation or sponsoring organization, such as the Church of the Nazarene Foundation.

Year-end deadline: Like with gifts via a personal check, a DAF grant sent through the mail will be processed as a 2025 gift if it is postmarked on or before Dec. 31, 2025, and the check is dated on or before Dec. 31, 2025. Please plan to make your DAF grant recommendation early enough to allow time for it to be processed by your custodian then received by MVNU in advance of the Dec. 31, 2025, deadline. (Note: You only qualify for a tax deduction when you contribute to your fund, not when you recommend a grant — though with the latter, you get to see your gift help students at MVNU.)

Make a Gift From Your IRA

If you are 70½ or older, you can give any amount up to $108,000 (in 2025) from your IRA directly to MVNU. (Note: This amount will be higher in subsequent years to adjust for inflation.) You will not pay income taxes on the transfer. If you are required to take required minimum distributions, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your obligation.

Year-end deadline: Your IRA administrator must remove the funds from your account by Dec. 31 for your donation to qualify this year. If you have check-writing features on your IRA, your check must clear your account by Dec. 31 to count toward your required minimum distribution for the calendar year. In either event, the distribution should be sent to the university at: Development Office, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 800 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
