MVNU celebrates Arbor Day with tree plantings

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (April 28, 2023) — Mount Vernon Nazarene University planted two trees on April 18 in an early celebration of Arbor Day (April 28).

Two donors gifted the university a Sun Valley Maple and a Scarlet Oak. The Campus Tree Advisory Committee prioritized native trees like oak and maples that are well-suited to local soil and climate conditions. In addition to being hardy species that should thrive on campus, the Sun Valley Maple and the Scarlet Oak are also known for their vibrant fall colors.

This annual tree planting event meets multiple objectives of the advisory committee.

“By planting these trees, we will be increasing both the shade canopy on campus and the diversity of tree species represented,” said Tim Radcliffe, committee chair. “Studies on public health and tree canopy have shown that increased tree cover is associated with a number of physiological and mental health benefits. The tree planting is also an educational opportunity for the community to learn about the value of trees, as well as some practical aspects of planting and care. Lastly, planting trees is also a part of MVNU’s commitment to sustainable campus beautification.”

The plantings and other tree care activities are coordinated by the Campus Tree Advisory Committee. Members of the committee include:

• Ben Cook — Director of Facilities Operations and Campus Safety 
• Dr. Jon Bossley and Tim Radcliffe (Chair) — Faculty Representatives
• Heather Hoag — Staff Representative
• Corey Hitchman — Coordinator of Grounds
• Kiera Jones and Owen Adkins — Student Representatives
• Dr. Randy Cronk — Community Representative

Students who participated in the event this year are Kiera “KJ” Jones, Sydney Van Fossen, Zachary Ballenger and Jessica Bock.

As a result of their ongoing efforts to beautify the campus, MVNU has again been recognized as a Tree Campus by Tree Campus Higher Education. This marks their fourth annual Tree Campus Higher Education designation.
