MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Carol Matthews as the new Executive Director for Foundational Learning and Retention. Dr. Matthews’ role embodies MVNU’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, inclusive education, and the holistic growth of students within a Christ-centered learning community.

Dr. Matthews brings a distinguished career in higher education spanning more than three decades, including prior leadership at MVNU as Director of Academic Support and Professor of Psychology from 1999 to 2012.

“Dr. Matthews brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in student success initiatives,” said MVNU President Dr. Carson Castleman. “Her deep commitment to intentional care for students aligns perfectly with our mission to foster a nurturing and supportive academic environment.”

“The MVNU community has incredibly strong and Christ-centered networks that have been a source of tremendous enrichment to my life. I look forward to renewing bonds with precious friends from previous years and establishing new connections as well,” Dr. Matthews added.

As Executive Director, Dr. Matthews will lead the Center for Student Success, the General Education program, and MVNU’s IGNITE Program for students with intellectual disabilities. She will chair the University Retention Council, guide first-year academic onboarding, and oversee the Nease Institute for transitional academic development. The role integrates strategic academic support with faith-informed instruction and intentional retention initiatives.

“We hope to build upon the MVNU academic vision by emphasizing that Student Success is not just a means for students to gain higher Grade Point Averages, but it is a means for preparing students for lifelong learning and service in the world of tomorrow,” Dr. Matthews said. “It is important to ensure that the programs and services offered through the Center for Student Success are cutting edge and relevant for equipping both the currently enrolled students as well as those who will enroll in the future.”

Dr. Matthews holds an Ed.D. in Educational Psychology from Baylor University, an M.A. in Christian Education from Wheaton College, and a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion from Spring Arbor University. Her doctoral research explored the impact of parental divorce on college student adjustment — a topic that underscores her long-standing commitment to understanding and supporting students’ developmental needs.

Her career in higher education includes roles as Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment, Dissertation Coach, Professor of Psychology and Consultant in Academic Support and Disability Services at Asbury Theological Seminary, and Director of the School of General Studies at Toccoa Falls College. Dr. Matthews has also served in a variety of roles at Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary, Dordt College and Clemson University. She has helped author accreditation materials for multiple institutions and worked to establish Asbury’s Writing Center and MVNU’s Disability Services program.

“My previous years of working with Freshman Year Experience and Student Success programs at Toccoa Falls College and MVNU have been an ideal backdrop for enhancements of the current academic environment at MVNU,” said Dr. Matthews. “In addition, my role in designing the Writing Center at another cutting-edge institution and immersion in consultation services in higher education in the past few years have expanded my horizons and generated a wealth of strategies that may contribute to the current academic services at MVNU.”

In addition to her academic credentials, Dr. Matthews is a licensed professional counselor, a published scholar, and an experienced accreditation and curriculum consultant. Her work consistently demonstrates a passion for student success, equitable learning, and spiritual formation.

“Dr. Matthews’ strategic approach to enhancing student retention and engagement will undoubtedly benefit our campus community,” Dr. Castleman said. “Her innovative ideas and passion for student advocacy will play a vital role in empowering our students to achieve their academic goals and thrive during their time at MVNU. We are confident that her leadership will help us continue to cultivate a vibrant, inclusive, and successful student experience.”
