MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (October 24, 2022) — Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Schnormeier Gallery is proud to present Landscapes and Crosses, a solo exhibition by Jim Hendrickx.

Landscapes and Crosses is an exhibition presented by Hendrickx, a retired MVNU Art faculty member. Living and working in rural Knox County gives easy access to many intriguing landscapes. These small paintings capture a personal view— the essence and sensation inspired by the landscapes and rural life. The crosses represent conversations with God. Constructed of discarded wood and parts of everyday aged wooden objects, the crosses honor imperfection, impermanence, and the incompleteness of life.

Jim Hendrickx was born in 1946 in upstate Minnesota, 45 miles east of Fargo, ND. He was interested in art from an early age and was encouraged by family members and teachers. He was introduced to landscape art at a small junior college in Fergus Fall, Mn. He earned a BA degree in art from Moorhead (Mn) State University. Jim and wife, Jan, were married in 1970. Following a short time in California, he returned to the Midwest where he attended University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, where he received a MA degree in art with a concentration in painting. After a lifetime of seeking, it was there that Jim came to faith.

In 1976, Jim and his family moved to Mount Vernon, Ohio as an art faculty member at Mount Vernon Nazarene College. While teaching at MVNC, he attended the Ohio State University, earning an MFA degree in painting. He taught various art studio and art history courses at MVNU for 35 years before retiring in 2011.

Jim and Jan have been married for 52 years and raised two children and have four grandchildren. He has a passion for making art, playing golf, and chess.

This exhibit will be on display in the gallery from Wednesday, Oct. 26 to Dec. 8, 2022. A gallery talk will be given at the Schnormeier Gallery during Homecoming, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m., with a reception to follow from 6-8 p.m.

The Schnormeier Gallery is located at 221 S. Main St., Mount Vernon, on the first floor of MVNU’s Buchwald Center. It is open Monday through Friday, from 1-5 p.m. For more information, contact the Schnormeier gallery at artgallery@mvnu.edu.
