MVNU celebrates employee retirements

Mount Vernon Nazarene University proudly announces the retirement of four distinguished faculty members and three staff members whose collective service spans over 170 years. Their unwavering dedication to education, mentorship, and leadership has profoundly shaped the MVNU community.

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University proudly announces the retirement of four distinguished faculty members and three staff members whose collective service spans over 170 years. Their unwavering dedication to education, mentorship, and leadership has profoundly shaped the MVNU community.

Dr. Colleen Bryan, Professor of Psychology — Dr. Bryan has been a cornerstone of MVNU’s Psychology Department since 1989. Over her 36-year tenure, she has served in various roles, including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. Dr. Bryan holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology, an M.Ed. in Counseling and Development from George Mason University, and a B.A. in Social Work from Eastern Nazarene College. Her commitment to student development and academic excellence has left a lasting impact on the university community.

Dr. Paul Madtes Jr., Professor of Biology — With 36 years of dedicated service, Dr. Madtes has been instrumental in advancing MVNU’s Biology program. His passion for biological sciences and commitment to student mentorship have inspired countless students to pursue careers in science and healthcare. Dr. Madtes’ contributions have significantly enriched the academic fabric of the university.

Professor John Donnelly, M.F.A., Professor of Art — Professor Donnelly has been a vibrant part of MVNU’s Art Department for 36 years. A native of Philadelphia, he earned his BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Tyler School of Art and his MFA from Indiana University. Beyond the classroom, Donnelly is renowned for his abstract artworks and public murals that adorn various spaces in Mount Vernon, including the Mount Vernon Industry Mural and the MTVarts Theatre Mural. His artistic contributions have significantly enhanced the cultural landscape of both the university and the local community.

Dr. Yvonne Schultz, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs — Dr. Schultz joined MVNU in 2000 and has since held multiple leadership roles, including Professor of English, Chair of the Department of Communication, Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, and Associate Vice President for Academic Administration. She holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Writing from Bowling Green State University. Dr. Schultz’s visionary leadership and dedication to academic excellence have been pivotal in shaping the university’s academic programs and policies.

Jeanna Howald, Head Women’s Softball Coach — Howald is retiring after 36 years at the helm. She amassed 786 wins during her career and was named the Crossroads League Coach of the Year in 2021. She was also named the Mid-Ohio Conference Coach of the Year in 1992 and named the NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year eight times. Howald guided MVNU to the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament 10 times during her tenure with the program.

Wendi Lahmon, Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for Student Life — Lahmon was celebrated for her 30 years of steadfast support and service to student life operations.

Thomas McCoy, Housekeeper/Custodian — McCoy was recognized for 11 years of dedicated care and stewardship of campus facilities.

“This year we bid farewell to a remarkable group of individuals who have dedicated their time talents and passion to MVNU,” said Dr. Carson Castleman, MVNU President. “Their commitment to excellence in teaching and service has left a lasting mark on our community and they will be greatly missed by many. We wish them the very best in their retirement.”
