MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University recognized several faculty members, staff members and students for outstanding leadership, teaching and service during its 66th commencement ceremonies May 9.
The awards highlighted individuals who have made a lasting impact on the university community through servant leadership, mentorship, academic excellence and faithful service.
Service Above Self Awards
Brianna Rider and Bryce Bosworth received MVNU’s annual Service Above Self Awards, one of the university’s highest student honors. The award recognizes students who exemplify MVNU’s motto, “To Seek to Learn Is to Seek to Serve,” through leadership, character and service to others.
Rider was honored for her involvement in music ministry, mentoring and campus leadership. Faculty and staff members recognized her commitment to encouraging and supporting fellow students while maintaining excellence academically and spiritually.
“Brianna consistently leads with humility, compassion and grace,” Dr. Castleman said during the ceremony. “She has used her gifts to uplift others and strengthen the spiritual life of the MVNU community.”
Bosworth received the award for his leadership in ministry and missions as well as his work with MVNU’s Aquaponics Collaboratory Project. He was recognized for his dedication to discipleship, servant leadership and community engagement.
“Bryce has modeled what it means to serve faithfully behind the scenes while investing deeply in people,” Dr. Castleman said. “His leadership reflects a genuine commitment to Christ and to others.”
Both students were praised for embodying MVNU’s motto in the classroom, on campus and throughout the community.
“These awards are about more than involvement,” Dr. Castleman said. “They recognize students whose lives demonstrate consistent service, integrity and a desire to make a difference for the Kingdom.”

Excellence in Teaching Award
Professor Scott Hardwick received the 2025-26 Excellence in Teaching Award, an honor selected through nominations from students, faculty members and administrators. The award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate exceptional commitment to student learning and mentorship inside and outside the classroom.
Students described Hardwick as a professor who invests deeply in student success while creating an engaging and supportive learning environment.
“Professor Hardwick challenges students to think critically while also making them feel seen, supported and encouraged,” Dr. Castleman said. “His classroom reflects both academic excellence and genuine care for students.”
Hardwick was praised for his dedication to mentoring students personally, professionally and spiritually.
“Great teaching leaves a lasting impact far beyond graduation,” Dr. Castleman said. “Professor Hardwick represents the kind of faculty member who shapes lives as much as minds.”
Those who nominated Hardwick noted that his influence extends well beyond course content, describing a professor who remains accessible, invested and encouraging long after the semester ends. His commitment to the whole student has made him a trusted mentor and a defining presence in the lives of many who pass through his classroom.

Presidential Outstanding Leadership Awards
MVNU presented Presidential Outstanding Leadership Awards to individuals whose service has significantly strengthened the university and its mission.
Dr. Krishana White and Dr. Brenita Nicholas-Edwards received the award in recognition of their leadership, mentorship and service to both MVNU and the Church of the Nazarene.
“Dr. White and Dr. Nicholas-Edwards have led with wisdom, compassion and faithfulness,” Dr. Castleman said. “Their influence on students and colleagues has strengthened this institution in countless ways.”

David Baker, Director of the Center for Innovation Education, received the award for his leadership in online learning initiatives and his support of faculty members, students and ministry partnerships around the world.
“David Baker’s leadership has expanded opportunities for students while helping MVNU extend its mission far beyond campus,” Dr. Castleman said during the ceremony.
Dr. Castleman said the recipients represent the heart of MVNU.
“These individuals represent the very best of our university community,” Dr. Castleman said. “Their leadership, service and commitment to others reflect the mission and values that define Mount Vernon Nazarene University.”
