MOUNT VERNON (June 14, 2022) — Mount Vernon Nazarene University is proud to announce the anticipated completion of the soccer and lacrosse stadium at Cougar Field.
The stadium is the final piece of the Education Gateway project that includes Energy Fieldhouse at Mount Vernon High School, the Mount Vernon City School District bus garage and parking, Knox County Foundation Community Fields, Yellow Jacket Drive extension, the Mount Vernon Avenue bridge and multi-purpose trail along Cougar Drive.
“Bringing the Education Gateway project to fruition is a significant milestone for MVNU and the dedicated community collaborators, and donors, who made this possible. The soccer and lacrosse stadium is an important venue for MVNU athletics and our partnership with Mount Vernon City schools,” said MVNU President Dr. Henry W. Spaulding II. “We look forward to filling the stands to support our athletes as they compete to the Glory of God!”
Plans for the stadium were announced during Homecoming 2018, with fundraising efforts starting immediately. Phase 1 — the turf field, lights and scoreboard — were finished in 2019. Construction of Phase 2 commenced in September 2021 and is nearing completion with the addition of seating for 500, locker rooms, restrooms, concession, press box, patio seating, and other amenities. The finished stadium is expected to enhance the game-day experience for athletes, fans, and broadcasters.
The name — CH4 Stadium — is derived from the chemical equation for methane, which is the primary component of natural gas. It is a testament to the value of natural gas in our everyday lives, its impact on the local economy, and the bonding power of the Mount Vernon community.
CH4 Stadium, located on corner of Cougar and Yellow Jacket drives, will be open for the start of soccer season in August. An official grand opening will be announced when details are complete.
