Student Spotlight: Ashley’s Story – Balancing Motherhood and Purpose Through MVNU’s Online Elementary Education Program
When Ashley enrolled at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU), she wasn’t just pursuing a degree—she was pursuing a purpose. As a mom of two and a first-generation college student, she needed more than just a flexible schedule. She needed a support system. And that’s exactly what she found.
“I didn’t even know where to begin,” she shared. “But the admissions team walked me through every step—from finding my books to helping me navigate the platform. I never felt alone.” That early support laid the foundation for everything that came next.
Learning on Her Terms
For Ashley, who is currently pursuing her degree in elementary education and expecting to graduate in December 2026, the flexibility of MVNU’s online learning platform has been a game-changer.
“It’s allowed me to be fully present for my kids, school, and home life without feeling burnt out,” she said. “I can make time for what I need when I need to do it.”
MVNU’s structure—one course at a time—gives Ashley the ability to focus, absorb, and apply what she’s learning. The team is also proactive in guiding her through decisions, even when she considered taking on more classes.
“They actually encouraged me to slow down to make sure I was getting the most out of each course. It’s not just about checking a box. It’s about learning in a meaningful way.”
Building Confidence, Staying Motivated
Ashley admits that organization has been key to her success. She makes weekly checklists, spaces out her assignments, and uses Fridays as her “flex” day.
“It keeps me focused and helps me avoid feeling overwhelmed,” she said.
But more than checklists and schedules, it’s the confidence she’s gained through the program that keeps her motivated. “I actually enjoy what I’m learning. And the people at MVNU make me feel supported every step of the way.”
A Foundation for the Future
When asked why she chose elementary education, Ashley’s answer is rooted in both her role as a mom and her sense of calling.
“I feel like the early years are the most impactful,” she said. “As a mom, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to nurture curiosity, confidence, and a love for learning at an early age. That perspective has deepened my passion for teaching and affirmed my desire to create a positive, supportive environment.”
After graduation, she plans to work with students in grades 3 through 5—an age group she’s come to love while creating lesson plans and engaging with course content.
Faith, Family, and Finding Her Voice
Ashley’s journey through MVNU has also strengthened her faith. She noted how small but intentional features—like prayer request tabs inside her courses—connected her more deeply to her classmates and to God.
“MVNU has helped me grow closer to God. Through the faith-based classes and relationships with professors and friends who encourage spiritual growth, I’ve been able to deepen my relationship with God and strengthen my faith in meaningful ways.”
Advice for Other Parents
To those considering going back to school, Ashley says it’s not only possible—it’s worth it.
“MVNU’s strong reputation, its commitment to academic excellence, and the support system built into its online programs make it manageable,” she said. “I never feel like I’m sacrificing one part of my life to succeed in another. You really can do it all.”
