Professor Profile: Dr. Mike VanZant – A Ministry Mentor Who Leads With Heart

For more than 15 years, Dr. Mike VanZant has taught biblical studies and ministry at MVNU. But his journey started long before that—across the globe in Africa, where he first felt called to teach and serve. Today, as the online ministry coordinator at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Dr. VanZant brings decades of pastoral and educational experience to students preparing for ministry through MVNU’s online programs.

“I just love being with students. I love watching them grow. Graduation is my favorite time of year. It’s a joy to see them complete their journey.”

While many institutions treat online learning as transactional, Dr. VanZant is committed to making it transformational. He shares his personal story in discussion forums, responds thoughtfully to student reflections, and offers direct communication by phone, email, or Zoom—whichever way helps students feel most supported.

“I want them to know I see them as human beings. We’re not just checking boxes. This is about becoming who you’re called to be.”

Building Ministry Leaders With Purpose

Dr. VanZant teaches the first two Bible courses in the online Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministry (BACM) program—on purpose. “I want to get to know the students right away,” he explains. “Let them know who I am, and show them they can trust me.” His courses aren’t just about passing—they’re about preparing students for real ministry, rooted in knowledge, integrity, and personal growth.

“We teach them to own their faith and knowledge, biblically, theologically, and practically.”

He describes MVNU’s approach as more than coursework—it’s preparation for the calling God has placed on each student’s life. Students learn how Scripture applies to real-world ministry, whether they’re leading a church, working in nonprofits, or serving children, families, or communities.

A Faculty That Cares—Deeply

Students at MVNU often describe the unexpected depth of connection they experience with faculty—even in fully online programs. Dr. VanZant’s personal approach makes that possible. Whether a student is celebrating success or struggling to stay motivated, he responds with care.

“There was a student who came into my office ready to quit. He said he wasn’t called. He had all kinds of reasons to give up. But we talked. I told him I believed in him—and I meant it. He stayed. He flourished. Today he’s a pastor doing incredible work.”

Online Learning That Feels Personal

Dr. VanZant knows online students often juggle work, ministry, family, and school. That’s why flexibility and understanding are part of the MVNU experience—but so are high standards. “We show grace when needed,” he says, “but we also make sure our students are equipped. Our goal is quality pastors and ministry leaders.”

A Message to Future Students

For those considering online ministry or biblical studies at MVNU, Dr. VanZant offers this:

“If you feel called to ministry and want to grow, we’ll give you every opportunity to succeed. But you have to show up. You have to be committed. If you do, you won’t just get a degree—you’ll grow as a person, as a leader, and as someone who’s ready to serve others.”
