Student Spotlight: How Jessica’s Classroom Experience Became Her Calling
For Jessica, returning to college was not about chasing a title or checking a box. It was about building a better future for her family and finally stepping into a calling that had been quietly waiting for years.
Jessica began her MVNU Online journey in May 2022. Nearly four years later, she is preparing to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. The path was demanding, deeply personal, and ultimately transformative.
A Dream Put on Hold, Then Rekindled
Jessica had always wanted to become a teacher. But like many adult learners, life had other plans first. As a single mom raising two sons, her focus was on providing stability, care, and opportunity. School was something she hoped to return to someday, when the timing felt right.
That moment came as her children got older and she found herself working inside an elementary school as an aide. Being surrounded by classrooms, teachers, and students reignited her passion for education. She saw firsthand the impact teachers made and knew that this was where she belonged.
“I knew if I wanted to give my kids the future they deserve, I needed to do this,” Jessica shared. “It felt like now or never.”
Why MVNU Online Was the Only Choice
Working in schools, Jessica was already familiar with Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s reputation. She had seen MVNU education students complete field placements and student teaching in local classrooms and knew the program was well respected.
“There was really no question where I would go,” she said. “I didn’t even look anywhere else.”
What truly made MVNU Online the right fit was flexibility. As a full-time working parent with two boys involved in year-round extracurriculars, Jessica needed a program that worked around real life.
The online format allowed her to complete coursework on her schedule. Whether that meant late nights after practices, early mornings, or weekends, she could log in when it worked for her without needing to be in a physical classroom at a set time.
Balancing School, Work, and Family
Jessica’s schedule was full in every sense of the word. Between full-time work, parenting, and school commitments, there were seasons where she took on two, three, and even four courses at a time.
“It was heavy,” she admitted. “Looking back, some of it feels like a blur. But when you’re determined, you find a way.”
MVNU Online supported her pace every step of the way. Advisors worked with her to build a manageable academic plan, and faculty understood the realities of adult learners balancing multiple responsibilities.
Field placements were also handled with care and flexibility. While some placements required travel to different schools and districts, MVNU worked with Jessica whenever possible to align requirements with her work and family responsibilities.
Supportive Faculty and Meaningful Connections
Throughout her program, Jessica found encouragement and guidance from faculty who understood adult learners and valued student feedback.
She specifically credits Professor Wilson as a standout influence in her experience. Having him for multiple courses, including educational philosophy, made a lasting impact.
“He genuinely cared about student feedback and actually implemented it,” Jessica shared. “Every time I saw his name as my professor, I was excited.”
Despite being an online student, Jessica never felt disconnected. Weekly discussion forums, group projects, and peer collaboration created meaningful connections with classmates navigating similar life stages and goals.
“It wasn’t just checking boxes,” she said. “It challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone in a really good way.”
Faith Integrated With Purpose
Jessica appreciated how MVNU Online incorporated faith into coursework in a thoughtful, respectful way. Rather than overwhelming the academic experience, faith-based elements were woven into learning in a way that felt natural and meaningful.
“MVNU Online did a great job integrating faith into the curriculum,” she said. “It was done gracefully, and I learned a lot along the way.”
The experience allowed her to grow academically while also reflecting on values, purpose, and service.
Motivation Fueled by Family
When asked what kept her motivated during the hardest moments, Jessica’s answer was immediate. Her sons.
“They are my why,” she said. “I want them to see that their mom can do hard things.”
There were moments when her boys stepped in to help, asking what they could do to support her during busy weeks. Jessica describes her degree as a “group effort” because of the role her family played in cheering her on.
Graduation, for Jessica, represents more than a diploma. It represents freedom, stability, and proof that it is never too late to rewrite your story.
Looking Ahead
Jessica is completing her student teaching at the same elementary school where she first realized teaching was her calling eight years ago. The experience feels full circle.
Her hope is to continue working in that school community, serving students and families in the place that supported her throughout her journey.
If she could offer advice to someone considering an online degree, Jessica keeps it simple.
“Do it,” she said. “It’s hard, but it’s possible. And you’ll be so proud of yourself when you finish.”
Jessica’s journey is a powerful reminder that education does not have a single starting point or timeline. With determination, flexibility, and support, meaningful change is always within reach.
