Emergency Management & Homeland Security Program Highlights
One of the greatest strengths of the Emergency Management & Homeland Security (BA) program at Mount Vernon Nazarene University is its emphasis on applied learning. Students move beyond the classroom through exercises, field experience, and practical opportunities that connect course content to real situations. Depending on available opportunities, students may work alongside professionals in local, national, or international settings. These experiences provide valuable exposure to the field before graduation and help students better understand the many directions a career in emergency management and homeland security can take.
At MVNU, faith isn’t just part of the experience — it’s the foundation. From prayer in the classroom to engaging Scripture and exploring real-world ethical questions, every moment is designed to help you grow. Here, your education goes beyond knowledge — it shapes who you are becoming.
Our travel and study-afar programs let you grow in your faith while experiencing new cultures. Through serving in communities across the U.S. or abroad, you’ll deepen your compassion, explore your callings, and gain meaningful experience for your résumé.
Why Choose MVNU
The Emergency Management & Homeland Security (BA) at MVNU prepares students to lead during emergencies, disasters, and other complex events that affect communities and organizations. The program takes a broad view of emergency management and homeland security by examining how public agencies, private companies, and nonprofit organizations prepare for risk, respond to crises, and support recovery.
Students study prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery while developing the leadership, communication, and decision-making skills needed in this growing profession. Coursework helps students understand how communities prepare for natural disasters, public safety incidents, infrastructure disruptions, and other emerging threats.
The program also encourages research and professional writing. Students complete research projects as part of their coursework and are encouraged to present strong work through conferences, workshops, and the MVNU undergraduate research symposium (sURC). Faculty also support students who wish to pursue publication or other scholarly opportunities.
