Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MS-SLP) Online
The Master of Science (MS) in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) strives to ensure that you are well-prepared to practice efficiently and effectively as a speech-language pathologist. The MVNU MS-SLP program is delivered online with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous coursework and clinical simulations. You will also participate in four in-person Clinical Practicum experiences in your area to ensure that you acquire the skills necessary to diagnose and treat a wide range of communication and swallowing disorders. When you graduate, you will have the tools needed to be a successful speech-language pathologist.
Our program adheres to the knowledge and skills acquisition standards set forth by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. These standards are utilized both academically and clinically. Use of these standards will provide eligibility for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).
The Master of Science (M.S.) education program in speech-language pathology {distance education} at Mount Vernon Nazarene University is an applicant for candidacy for Accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700. Candidacy is a “preaccreditation” status with the CAA, awarded to developing or emerging programs for a maximum period of 5 years.

The MS-SLP includes the following courses:
MSLP-6003
This course focuses on the science of reading and writing. It addresses typical and exceptional reading and writing development, and assessments and interventions for individuals with reading and writing differences. Current theories, research, and reading assessments will be provided. Exploration of reading differences, cultural implications, and accessibility will occur.
MSLP-6083
Sign Language for Education and Healthcare
This course will introduce sign language with an emphasis on signs needed in education and healthcare. It will reinforce conversational skills with use of American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary, fingerspelling, and number signs. This course will also educate students about the Deaf culture and community.
MSLP-6573
Medical Speech-Language Pathology
This course will explore medical speech-language pathology with a focus on clinical reasoning, interprofessional practice, and the continuum of care. It will encompass an overview of various healthcare settings with inclusion of otolaryngology, pharmacology, and neuroimaging. Complex medical concerns will be targeted, including tracheostomy and ventilator care.

Careers in Speech-Language Pathology
School-based SLP
Use your SLP skills to provide speech and language services to various school age children. The MVNU MS-SLP program provides coursework, and a practicum experience specific to the school setting to equip you to work as a school-based SLP.
Pediatric SLP
The MVNU MS-SLP program will prepare you to work with the pediatric population in a variety of settings which may include early intervention, private practice, or an outpatient clinic.
Medical SLP
The second year of the MVNU MS-SLP program focuses on medical speech-language pathology to prepare you to work in a medical environment treating individuals across the lifespan. The medical SLP may work in a range of locations, such as hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health, or in specialized medical settings, such as long-term acute care or a brain injury center.
