MVNU MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES

These Ensemble opportunities are open for all of campus. You do not have to be a music major to participate!

VOCAL ENSEMBLES

Collegians Chorale:
This 40 member SATB ensemble performs frequently on campus for events such as chapel, Christmas Festival, Spring Concert, Baccalaureate, and is an integral group in the annual Choral Union presentation of Handel's Messiah.
The choir tours the educational region of Ohio, West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky, and periodically performs the National Anthem for professional athletic teams and the MVNU Cougars.
Every third or fourth year, Collegians Chorale has taken a mission/concert tour abroad, typically to Europe to such countries as Italy, Spain, Croatia, Hungry, Germany and Austria. This choir performs a wide variety of styles including sacred classics, hymn arrangements, folk, gospel and contemporary.
The choir meets 4:40-5:40 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The choir is directed by Dr. Robert Tocheff. Auditions for all choirs happen on the Sunday before fall classes begin.
Treble Singers Women's Choir:
This women’s ensemble numbers 20-30 members and performs on campus and in local community as well as touring churches in Ohio Kentucky, and West Virginia. Treble Singers join other choirs for the Choral Union presentation of Handel's Messiah in December. This group meets 4:40-5:40 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the fall for 1 credit hour. They do not meet on Wednesday during spring semester. The choir is directed by Mrs. Sabina Anderson. Auditions for all choirs happen on the Sunday before fall classes begin.
Una Voce Chamber Ensemble:
This SATB chamber choir typically has between 16-20 members. They participate in a variety of on-campus concerts in both fall and spring semesters, as well as occasionally presenting in area churches. They typically have a culminating spring concert that showcases all their repertoire from the school year.
Una Voce rehearses 3:20-4:20pm Tuesday and Thursday for 1 credit hour. They also participate in the fall Choral Union rehearsals on Wednesdays (4:40-5:40pm). They do not meet on Wednesdays in spring semester. Freshman in Una Voce are required to participate in either Collegians or Treble Singers for their first year. This choir is directed by Mrs. Carrie Vail.
Music Stage Production:

This course provides students an opportunity to prepare and present scenes from an opera or a full operatic production, a Broadway musical, or a musical showcase depending on the semester. The course is taken for 1 credit and rehearsal times are determined at the beginning of each semester.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES

Symphonic Wind Ensemble:
This ensemble is the traditional concert band at MVNU and is open to students of all majors. The Wind Ensemble performs several concerts on campus each semester and occasionally performs for off campus events. The ensemble performs a variety of exciting music of varying difficulty from traditional to contemporary works. Members of this ensemble also participate in a fall band retreat, which focuses on musical development and social enrichment.
The ensemble meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wind Ensemble can be taken for 1 credit hour and is directed by Dr. John Packard. There is an optional chair placement audition in the fall that occurs about a week into the semester. New members are highly encouraged to audition, but not required.
Jazz Band:

The Jazz Band performs contemporary, popular, and Big Band jazz music. This ensemble presents fall and spring concerts and performs frequently in other campus activities and at local public schools. The Jazz Band rehearses on Thursday 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jazz Band can be taken for 1 credit hour and is directed by Mr. Chuck Dettmar. The jazz band typically does not require auditions.

Pep Band:

The Pep Band plays for a combination of men’s and women’s home basketball games. Rehearsals are Tuesdays 7:00-8:30 p.m. beginning in September and continuing through February, depending on post-season games. Game days and times vary. Pep Band can be taken for .5 credit and is directed by Dr. John Packard. This group does not require an audition and is open to all instrumentalists. Guitar, bass, and drumset players are highly encouraged to participate as well.

Flute Choir:
The Flute Choir performs at concerts on campus, as well as appearing at the annual Central Ohio Flute Association Festival. This ensemble meets Thursday 10:20-11:20 a.m. Flute Choir can be taken for .5 credit hour and is directed by Mrs. Jennifer Packard. There is no audition to participate in flute choir.
String Ensemble:

This ensemble performs at labs and selected ensemble concerts and is directed by Dr. Juan Carlos Ortega. It generally rehearses once a week, currently for zero credit. No audition is required for this ensemble.

Percussion Ensemble:

This ensemble is formed when there is sufficient student interest and budget availability. It is a zero-credit ensemble.

Other Chamber Ensembles:

These ensembles are formed when there is sufficient student interest and budget availability. They are zero credit ensembles.
