Theatre Program

Whether you're an experienced performer or just curious about the stage, MVNU Theatre offers an exciting opportunity to grow in creativity, confidence, and community. Students from all majors are welcome to audition for our productions, help with set design, lighting, costumes, and stage crew, or join the Theatre Club for fun events and workshops throughout the year. We produce multiple main stage shows annually, with auditions for the fall production(s) held at the beginning of the semester, and auditions for the spring production taking place before Christmas break. Even if you’re not ready to jump in, we’d love to see you in the audience—our shows are a great way to support your fellow students and experience the arts on campus. No matter how you get involved, there’s a place for you in MVNU Theatre.

Scholarship opportunities are available every year for Theatre Club leadership. After participating in the cast or crew of at least one MVNU Theatre production, you are eligible to apply for these leadership positions.

Theatre Coordinator

Sydney Moon graduated from MVNU in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. Sydney is originally from Dover, Ohio and now resides in Mount Vernon. She has acted in theatre productions at Dover High School, The Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County, Kent State Tuscarawas, Liberty University, and MTVarts. Her favorite roles have been Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, Alice Beineke in The Addams Family, and Ensemble in Footloose. She has directed Bedtime Stories: As Told By Dad (Who Messed Them Up) and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory at MVNU. She enjoys the whole creative process from analyzing a script, creating props and set pieces, sound and lighting design, choreographing dances and fight scenes, exploring various acting methods, to finally seeing a show come together and bring joy to audiences. Sydney invites anyone interested in learning more about MVNU Theatre to audition for a show or volunteer to work behind the scenes. MVNU Theatre is a place where everyone belongs, many friendships are formed, lasting memories are made, and creativity flourishes!

“MVNU Theatre has been such a wonderful opportunity for me to meet so many incredible new friends, grow as an actor, and make some fun new hilarious memories! This program is so welcoming and supportive of everyone’s talents and skills. Whether it’s the tech side of helping with costumes, props, set, makeup, hair, stage lighting, etc. or the performance side (singing, dancing, and acting onstage); MVNU Theatre is such a great way to showcase your talents, while having a blast doing so!”

“MVNU Theatre has given me a place to laugh, cry, and grow with a group of people who are passionate about an art form. I will carry these teamwork experiences and leadership tips I’ve picked up with me into the real world! Thank you MVNU for these opportunities!”

“Theatre has reinforced my love for so many things including: storytelling, designing, dressing up, acting, singing, and dancing. Not only has it been an outlet for crazy shenanigans on stage, but it’s helped me think about my future. I would love to combine my major in fine arts with the theatre skills I’ve learned to work for an official theater company working behind the scenes. Most importantly though, my experience in MVNU Theatre has helped me discover who I am and find some amazing friends. I’m so thankful for these opportunities and I don’t take them for granted.”

“One of the unique opportunities of theatre is the diversity of those involved. Each person has a different background, family, and story that has shaped them deeply. However, we are all connected by our love for one thing — theatre. It is this passion that fuels our ability to find community with individuals we never would have found ourselves close to otherwise. Our theatre program is one of the aspects of MVNU that I love the most. I have found the people whom I feel closest to on this campus within the walls of Thorne Performance Hall and I wish the same for every cast and crew member that decides to join our theatre program.”
